Understand what SSL certificates are, why they matter for SEO and security, and how to get one for your business website.

By Luke Hawkins
SSL certificates encrypt data between your website and visitors. Without SSL, your site shows "Not Secure" warnings and ranks lower in Google. Here's what you need to know. What is SSL? SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) / TLS (Transport Layer Security) encrypts data transmitted between browser and server. When active, your site uses HTTPS instead of HTTP. Visual Indicators: Padlock icon in address bar, "Secure" or "Connection is secure" message, HTTPS in URL Why SSL Matters Security: Encrypts sensitive data (passwords, credit cards, personal info), protects against man-in-the-middle attacks, prevents data interception on public WiFi Trust: Browsers show "Not Secure" warning without SSL, customers won't enter payment info on insecure sites, professional businesses have SSL SEO: Google uses HTTPS as ranking factor, sites without SSL rank lower, some browsers block insecure sites entirely Legal Compliance: GDPR requires protecting personal data, PCI DSS requires SSL for payment processing Types of SSL Certificates Domain Validated (DV): Verifies domain ownership only, issued in minutes, free or £0-50/year, sufficient for most small businesses Organization Validated (OV): Verifies business identity, takes 1-3 days to issue, £40-150/year, shows organization name in certificate Extended Validation (EV): Highest verification level, extensive business verification, £150-1,000+/year, shows green address bar (some browsers), mainly for large e-commerce Wildcard SSL: Covers domain and all subdomains, useful for multiple subdomains, £60-300/year Getting SSL Certificate Free Options: Let's Encrypt (most popular free option), included with many hosting providers (Cloudflare, Netlify, Vercel) How to Get: Through Hosting: Most hosts provide free Let's Encrypt SSL. Enable with one click in control panel, auto-renews every 90 days Certificate Authority: Purchase from CA (Sectigo, DigiCert, GlobalSign), install on your server, more control but more technical Installing SSL Steps: Purchase or enable SSL certificate, generate CSR (Certificate Signing Request), receive and install certificate, configure site to use HTTPS, redirect HTTP to HTTPS, update internal links to HTTPS, update external services (Google Analytics, etc.) Most Hosting: One-click SSL installation, automatic renewal, automatic HTTP to HTTPS redirect After Installing SSL Update Website: Change all internal links to HTTPS, update images/scripts to HTTPS, fix mixed content warnings (HTTP resources on HTTPS page) Update External Services: Google Search Console, Google Analytics, social media profiles, email signatures, marketing materials Monitor: Check certificate expiry, test HTTPS works properly, monitor for mixed content warnings, verify redirects working Common SSL Issues Mixed Content: Some resources still loading via HTTP. Fix by updating to HTTPS Certificate Expired: Renew certificate before expiry (Let's Encrypt auto-renews) Wrong Domain: Certificate doesn't match domain. Ensure certificate covers your domain Chain Issues: Incomplete certificate chain. Install intermediate certificates SSL and Performance Myth: HTTPS slows down websites Reality: HTTP/2 (requires HTTPS) is faster than HTTP/1.1, modern servers handle HTTPS efficiently, minimal performance impact Checking Your SSL Tools: SSL Server Test (ssllabs.com/ssltest), WhyNoPadlock.com (finds mixed content), Browser Developer Tools (check for warnings) Look For: A or A+ rating, valid certificate not expiring soon, no mixed content warnings, proper redirects from HTTP Cost Summary Free: Let's Encrypt (via most hosting), Cloudflare, many hosting providers Paid: Domain Validated: £0-50/year, Organization Validated: £40-150/year, Extended Validation: £150-1,000/year, Wildcard: £60-300/year For most small businesses, free Let's Encrypt SSL is perfect. It's secure, automatic, and trusted by all browsers. Bottom Line Every website needs SSL. It's free, easy to set up, and essential for security, trust, and SEO.
